I started this book and finished it in 3 days. This Coker story is gripping and full of twists and turns. If you enjoy civil war stories you will not be disappointed.
Definitely recommend, 5 stars.
I purchased this book a while ago on recommendation of a friend. It was a fast paced page turner that kept my attention. The characters were well written and believable, and it had some great action as well as some serious parts. I think this is a great debut by Larry Boucher, I hope he writes a sequel to it!
This is a book that anyone will enjoy, not just those who like historical fiction or tales of the Old West. It is a story about people settling in inhospitable lands in Kansas during the Civil War and trying to make lives for themselves while under constant threat. They fight off raiders from the Confederate army while trying to maintain an uneasy truce with the nearby Arapahoe tribe. Thankfully the characters are not over-the-top or one-dimensional. Rather they have more complex and conflicting thoughts and emotions making them relatable, regardless of which side they are on. And the details of everyday life in the Old West gives the story an authentic feel. The author builds the suspense skillfully until you just can't put the book down, because you have to know what happens to the characters. I've already recommended this book to my friends. Overall an enjoyable and engrossing read!
This is an excellent story, and very well told. It was hard to put the book down I wanted to find out what happened next. I recommend this book to anyone that likes to read.
I'm impressed with the acknowledgments at the beginning of the book, instead of the end, the absence of a research team, as Mr. Boucher does all his own research. The story accurately, describes the hardships many of our pioneer ancestors faced as they moved west. I certainly enjoyed the descriptions of the mode of transportation - horses. The storage in and under the wagons. Reading Mr. Boucher's books is a joy combined with actual history facts. the story holds the attention of it's readers, 2 of my grandchildren ages 11 and 13 also enjoy Mr. Boucher's stories. The Scout is a cliffhanger. Will Adam and ma sell Ferris Station to relocate to Colorado, when the war ends will Jim, Hanna and the children relocate to Colorado? Will the Army station Jim in a Colorado Army post? So many questions? As I finished The Scout the second time all these questions are there. Last I would like to take this opportunity to recommend this book to all readers and thank Mr. Boucher for his time and effort in writing this book and sharing his vivid imagination with us.
This is a book about honor and courage for Jim. A powerful character dealing with equally well developed characters in the book. Life lessons to be learned about life and duty to oneself and those that you love. A story that anyone can enjoy mixed a bit of history and lessons from the past. For transparence, I got the ARC of this book.
